All educators working in Lutheran schools, Directors of Christian Education and Deaconesses in the South Dakota District are cordially invited to the annual South Dakota District Educators Conference, October 7-8, 2021 at Sioux Falls Lutheran School, 6715 South Boe Lane, Sioux Falls, SD.
The conference will focus on the personal mental health of the educator/individual. Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. Our mental health affects how we think, feel, act, and perceive the world. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. EdWeek Research Center reported in March 2021 that 84% of teachers surveyed said that teaching was more stressful than it was before the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, maybe more than any other time, educators must take their mental health seriously and have discussions about their mental well-being.
Two presenters will be leading discussions about how we can stay mentally strong and bring the best versions of ourselves into our classrooms. Tony Boer, MSW, is a therapist in Sioux Falls, SD. He founded Sioux Empire Christian Counseling to help individuals and families learn how to deal with challenges, grow and thrive. Tony has spoken and presented on a variety of topics, including marriage, adoption and autism. In addition, Tony provides supervision and consultation to fellow therapists. He has written a book, The Art of Therapy, to guide other therapists in how to use his unique brand of insights and interventions. This fall his next book, The Marriage Manual, will be released.
Our other presenter is Wanda Jeffcoat, MS, LPC-MH, QMHP is a counselor at Wellspring Therapy Center, Sioux Falls, SD. Wanda offers support to individuals, couples, and families who are affected by the struggles of daily life such as stress, anxiety, depression, or those who have experienced trauma, abuse, or neglect. She incorporates mindfulness, dialectical behavior therapy, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) into treatment where beneficial and applicable. She has advanced training in using EMDR to treat anxiety/phobias, childhood trauma, domestic abuse, complex PTSD, and military/combat related trauma. She is skilled at incorporating creative arts, sand tray therapy, and other unique forms of expression to provide an alternative to traditional “talk therapy.” Wanda does community and group presentations on Suicide Awareness/Prevention for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and is a certified CAMS (Collaborative Approach to Managing Suicidality) provider.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him. The LORD is the strength of his people, a fortress of salvation for his anointed one.
Go on up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good news; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good news; lift it up, fear not; say to the cities of Judah, “Behold your God!”
Behold, my servant shall act wisely; he shall be high and lifted up, and shall be exalted.
And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up
